Church and State

When I was 16, I wrote this poem about that separation of Church and State. I think it is fitting commentary after today’s upsetting Senate vote in New York that defeated the same-sex marriage bill.

CHURCH AND STATE

Church is Church,
State is State.

Church cannot control the choices of politicians,
State cannot expect the blessings of religion.

Church sets the standard on how to treat your neighbor,
Not how to vote and political behavior.

Church should not pressure government policy,
State should unite and allow democracy.

Church is faith in religion,
State is faith in freedom.

Church must concede the throne,
State must stand alone.

Church and State must separate,
That simple—no debate.
